Chronological references of Timisoara
1172 - it is mentioned the name of a governor of Timis : Pancratiu who ruled the county with the residence in Timisoara 1441 – 1446 – governor and count of Timis is Iancu of Hunedoara 1474 – Timisoara is mentioned for the first time as a city , in diplomas and documents 1552 – Timisoara is conquered by the Turks and becomes a pashalik capital 12.10.1716 - the Austrian prince Eugen of Savoya and his troops drove away the Ottomans conquering the city 1716 – 1734 – the civil and military governor of Banat is count Claudius Florimund Mercy 1722 – 1786 – the colonisation of the so called „Schwaben“ (generic name) in Banat 1723 - on the 25 – th of April is layed the foundation stone of the modern town Timisoara; the construction lasts for 42 years and is finished in 1765 1728 – 1771 - the digging and adjustment of the Bega canal and its reshaping to a navigable river transport arterial 24.12.1731 – in the time of mayor Peter Solderer , who placed the foundation stone of the German townhall ( at present Primaria veche – the old townhall) 12.12.1781 - Josef th II-nd signs the raising of Timisoara to the rank of a free royal town.Timisoara has economical autonomy and can be represented in the Diet from Buda. 1782 - the Gymnasium of the Piarists is inaugurated 1853 - the first monograph of the town called „Monograph of the free royal town Timisoara „( Monographie der königlichen Freistadt Temeswar ) is published 1857 – the railway Seghedin Timisoara is inaugurated . The railwaystation from Josefin ( the future North Railwaystation) is built . 01.10.1857 - the gas illumination of the streets is introduced, Timisoara being the first city in Romania which introduces this kind of streets ilumination 1869 – the tramway with horses is inaugurated on a length of 6,6 km. After Timisoara this system has been introduced also in Bukarest, Leipzig, Frankfurt on Main, Dresda , Hanovra 1872 – 1875 - the new theatre is been built, the National Theatre (Teatrul National) 12.11.1884 – the streets illumination is done with electric energy, Timisoara being the first city in Europe 1899 - on July the 24 –th the first electrical tramway from Romania is ianugurated, long before many other cities in Europe. 1909 - the hidroelectric power plant (Turbinele) is inaugurated on the river Bega 28.07.1919 – the Romanian administration is introduced 03.11.1920 - the Polytehnic school of Timisoara is established 29.12.1930 – the census shows that Timisoara has 91.866 inhabitants 20.12.1936 – the solemnity of laying the foundation stone of the Mitropolitan cathedral 1946 - in the presence of His Majesty , King Michael the I st of Romania is baptised the Mitropolitan cathedral of Timisoara 1948 - The Pedagogical Institute is established and in 1962 it changes into a University 1961 - in 1965 is built the West University 1989 - starts the revolution in Romania, Timisoara being the first free city of Romania |
